Hi
The Advising Discovery Group is working on using Information
Technology to enhance advising at MIT. They are trying survey students
to find out what they would like to be included in such a system.
Below is a partial list of ideas for new system. Please rank each item
from 1 to 3 (1 = lowest priority and 3 = highest priority) and send
your results to Joanne Straggas (joanne@mit.edu). Please also feel
free to add any ideas or suggestions you have for the project to the
list.
Thanks for your input and time.

Wish List from Students
Please rate each item from 1 to 3 (1 = lowest priority and 3 = highest
priority)
Rank
_____1. Provide access to accurate, easily understandable, current
academic on-line audits that integrate GIRs, major, HASS
concentration, minor, communication and PE requirements. Info
available to students, academic administrators and advisors
_____2. Provide interactive planning tools such as on-line "what if"
scenarios to help students understand the requirements of a major and
it's integration with GIRs. For example, provide simulated audits
which would show students how the courses they have taken would fit
with a change of major.
_____3. Provide students with an online course planner allowing
students to do long-term planning.
_____4. Provide a web-based registration system which would allow for
submitting petitions, add/drops etc. online with permission from an
advisor.
_____5. Provide on-line student portfolios (or virtual folders). Each
student maintains their portfolio and controls access to different
parts of it. Portfolios would contain self-biographical information,
academic plans, resume, UROPS, extracurricular activities, AP scores,
samples of course work, writing samples, reflections of various
experiences. Students could set access to the various files.
_____6. Provide a mechanism to put students in touch with mentors in
their field of interest.
_____7. Provide more centralization and standardization of
information. i.e. present student/advisor information in a unified
manner with a common style, look and feel.
_____8. Provide students with an interactive personal calendar that is
integrated with academic calendars (including deadlines) and the
events calendar.
_____9. Provide more links from course catalogue to include course
evaluations, course homepages, textbooks.
_____10. Provide a students resources page or portal to include
non-academic information as well as academic.
_____11. Initiate an online advisor, like a dean on call.
_____12. Initiate an online advising board/advising nightline/chatroom
(like an advising olc) where students can ask questions.
_____13. Provide information on course sections on line and allow
students to change sections on line.
_____14. Provide a homepage for each class. At a minimum this page
should include information on the time, place, books, how to contact
the professor, and how to contact TAs.
