Tom Barrett August 13, 2024, 08:30 AM Hey everyone, Hope you all had a great weekend. I was catching up on some gardening over the weekend and it got me thinking. Does anyone have any good gardening tips or recent experiences they'd like to share? I'm looking to start a little herb garden but I'm not quite sure where to begin. Best, Tom --- Mary Cheng August 13, 2024, 09:15 AM Hi Tom, Great topic! Starting an herb garden is a fantastic idea. One of my tips is to make sure you have good quality soil and enough sunlight. Most herbs need at least six hours of direct sunlight every day. I've found that basil and rosemary are really easy to grow and very rewarding. Cheers, Mary --- Sanjay Patel August 13, 2024, 09:45 AM Good morning all, I agree with Mary on sunlight and soil quality. Another thing to consider is the watering schedule. Herbs like basil and mint need frequent watering, but make sure the pots have good drainage to prevent waterlogging. Using a mix of peat moss,
vermiculite, and compost can create a great growing medium. Happy gardening, Sanjay --- Linda Walker August 13, 2024, 10:20 AM Hi everyone, I love the idea of an herb garden. One trick I've learned is to grow herbs that you use most often in your cooking. This way, it's really practical and feels rewarding. I have parsley, thyme, and cilantro growing in small pots on my kitchen windowsill. They get plenty of sunlight there and are within easy reach when I'm cooking. Regards, Linda --- Alex Johnson August 13, 2024, 11:00 AM Hey folks, Just jumping in here to add that if you’re new to gardening, you might want to start with some hardy herbs like oregano and sage. They are quite forgiving if you make a few mistakes. Also, consider using a spray bottle for a gentle watering approach, especiaIly in the initial stages when the plants are still small. Best, Alex --- Tom Barrett August 13, 2024, 01:30 PM Thanks for the tips, everyone! These suggestions are really helpful. I didn't
know about the mix of peat moss, vermiculite, and compost, Sanjay. I'll definitely give that a try. Linda’s idea of keeping the herbs on the kitchen windowsill where they can be easily accessed sounds perfect too. I’ll start with basil and rosemary as suggested by Mary, and maybe throw in some oregano and sage per Alexs suggestions. I’m excited to get started. I'll keep you posted on my progress. Appreciate the help, Tom
