Hi all,
For those of you who have received or will receive degrees in 2000,
2001, and 2002, you can vote for your representative on the MIT
Corporation.
The candidates are:
Jennifer Frank, SB '00
Sudeb Dalai, SB '02
Aziz Hassanali, SB '02
Randall Pinkett, SM 98, MBA 98, PhD '02
Satwiksai Seshasai, SB '01, MEng '02
Oreoluwa Adeyami, SB '01
You can view their credentials, acheivements, candidate statements
(answering the questions, "What do you consider to be the most
significant challenge that MIT faces?" and "Why would you like to be a
member of the MIT Corporation?") and endorsements (I personally found
the endorsements rather interesting) at
http://web.mit.edu/alum/corpballot/index.html .
For those wanting to learn more about the MIT Corporation, start with
http://web.mit.edu/corporation/index.shtml .
I think everyone who can should vote. However, I (or anyone else)
can't tell you who to vote for either, since campaigning is strictly
prohibited. But you should go look at the website and vote. Though
I don't know what the actual numbers are, my impression is that not
many folks vote.
The Corporation makes many important decisions about MIT's long-term
plans and future and on policy. Currently there are 79 members of the
MIT Corporation. 15 are elected Alumni/ae, and 5 are Alumni/ae from
recent graduating classes (One is elected every year, and they serve 5
year terms). The rest are Life Members and Term Members from
academia, government and business, and because the Corporation website
doesn't include class years, I don't know how many of them are Alumni.
But my point is that these 5 recent alums are the closest thing the
Corporation has to "student input" and these positions are very
important.
Take care all,
-Sarah, '01
