I find it very interesting -- well, stupidly hilarious -- how
Judcomm arrived at its decision. Their fact finding process
included looking up the word bribery in the Oxford Dictionary,
looking up bribery provisions in Massachusetts Election Law,
and asserting a whole bunch of nonsense with no bearing in the
UA Constitution or Election Rules.
This half-assed attempt to play James Madison fails as
Judcomm refuses to explain exactly how it can describe
the Creighton/Brar campaign strategy as "bribery" even
according to the Oxford Dictionary. Instead, we're told
that Judcomm "feels" that it's obvious that it does. I'm
no lawyer, but even I know that the mere suggestion of
bribery is not prosecuted as the full blown act but merely
an attempt with lesser penalties. Even then, the judiciary
cannot rule against the defendent without clear proof of
his means to carry out the act. Otherwise, the perp is
just blowing a whole lotta hot air.
A democratic process shouldn't protect the interests
of the candidates, but those of their constituents.
Let's face it. The UA has a bunch of pussies running
scared at the idea that people think so little of them
they're willing to buy a candidate into the Presidency
just to spite them. I say who the fuck cares if the
Presidency's bought? Maybe next time around it'll be
$20, then $50. Hell, maybe the Council'll will actually
do something for a change and remove the undemocratic
limits on campaign spending.
