Anyone who could possibly be disappointed in the UA's
decision to ban Creighton and Brar needs to go back to
eighth grade and learn what a democracy is. Good
morning! Democracies have absolutely no room for cash-
for-votes scams. That would disqualify anyone from any
office in this august country, including, I note with
great relief, the UA. It would also land them in the
prosecutor's office, and I hope Creighton and Brar will
face a similar fate at MIT.
Voice of the people? The voice of the people was just
irrevocably ruined for this election by Creighton and
Brar. They have no right to hold office. Who in the
heck do they think they are, Robert Mugabe?
Having said that, it is possible that Creighton and Brar
may be legally liable for the money they promised
*anyway*, regardless of whether they win or are
disqualified. Personally, I would encourage every
single undergraduate to send an e-mail to their vote-
counting address. (I couldn't stop laughing when I saw
Crieghton's message that he didn't think most people
would cheat. Surely he couldn't be appealing to
people's sense of ethics!) The Bush fund is only $5,000
anyway, so if he received more than 500 votes (which
he'd need in order to win) he would have had to pay out-
of-pocket, or else renege on his promise. People who've
already been duped by his scam may be owed their money.
Note to UA - the Bush fund needs to be reviewed. The
next person to try this might be a little more
sophisticated and refrain from announcing it publicly.
Note to Creighton/Brar - don't bother sending me an
obscene-o-gram. It won't do any good. Also, don't
whine about whether the Election Commission should make
public statements. You lost the case. Do local courts
follow a gag order until all appeals have been exhausted?
I congratulate the UA Election Commissioner for doing a
difficult job with integrity. The Election Commission's
precedent-setting decision confirms that ethics matter
after all. She deserves our applause and gratitude.
