Over one in five Americans between the ages of 40 and 75 takes cholesterol=
-lowering drugs called statins -- ostensibly to prevent a heart attack or s=
troke.

We are currently experiencing epidemics of memory loss, dementia, and Alzhe=
imer=E2=80=99s disease (now the sixth leading cause of death in the US).

This may not be a coincidence.
And there are much better alternatives to preserve both your heart and brai=
n health.

Look to the states for progress on health care
States are where we should see the most progress and glimpses of how a bett=
er health care system might look. Romneycare became a reality in Massachuse=
tts before Congress passed Obamacare. Many states are taking lessons from t=
he election that Americans want more health security for themselves and the=
ir neighbors, and expect politicians to get on board
Three red states =E2=80=94 Utah, Nebraska and Idaho =E2=80=94 put Medicaid =
expansion on the ballot after their governments refused to act. It passed i=
n all three. Kansas, which elected a Democratic governor, is also likely to=
expand Medicaid next year
Other states are looking to test more far-reaching ideas. Watch New Mexico,=
Illinois, Minnesota and Connecticut as they consider a public option. Stat=
es like North Carolina, a purple state with innovative leadership, are embr=
acing ideas like adding social services and integrated mental health care i=
nto Medicaid. Others will take action on prescription drug costs or issues =
like surprise medical bills
To be sure, some states will head the other direction, imposing new require=
ments to qualify for coverage. The Trump administration has championed thes=
e approaches =E2=80=94 whether it's new paperwork to prove people are worki=
ng or threats to legal residents that using legal benefits could hamper the=
ir ability to become citizens
