I have been out of town and so did not participate in your e-mail
conversation with Mr. Shulman. However, had I too was certainly misquoted.
Never did I "call for a lobby that should be very streamlined and
contemporary." That is obviously not possible given the existing
architecture and the recent restoration of this grand space. Referring to
the manner in which I think information displays should be installed in
this space, I do indeed believe that they should be elegantly understated
to 1) provide the information needed to the MIT community and the 10's of
thousands of visitors who pass through this space annually in the most
effective manner, 2) work in harmony with the existing architecture, and
yet 3) not be imitative of the existing architecture. If this means
"streamlined" then I would agree with that characterization of these
smaller scaled elements. I am convinced that these minor projects will
provide a beneficial counterpoint to the newly cleaned cast stone and serve
to animate this space in an exciting manner. In addition, we see many
opportunities to take advantage of innovative information display that are
being developed on this campus and being employed by other institutions
around the globe.
I assume that you have the meeting notes which Kim Maciorowski put together
regarding the two IAP sessions. While I was only able to attend the first,
I understand that there was considerable movement away from the drop poster
idea in the second as expressed by many students. Good luck with your
meeting with Mr. Shulman and please let me know if I can be of assistance
as we progress with the schematic design of these displays.
