well, i'll speak to john's original point.  
a lot of what you experience is because
you're in the wrong places at the wrong
times (being in your office hacking when
you could be elsewhere is an example of
this).

i've found, however, that being in the
"right place" doesn't guarantee anything.
i often find that when i'm in the "right
place" i'm surrounded by people that i
really have nothing to say to.  (that's
a lousy sentence, but you'll have to
live with it).  i could go on with a
current case study in progress, but it's
too depressing ...
