For me it was the Freshman Writing Test, and I didn't know anything
about any of the topics, so I was stretching it to get 3 points. It
came across sounding pretty wimpy. The person who graded it failed
me, the person who met with me said she actually would have given me a
marginal pass, but oh, well, now you should take a class, and it would
be a good thing anyway.
In other words, it can be pretty arbitrary. (I'd be interested in
other folks' experience.)
