Why don't you want cars behind you? If they're matching your speed, you have
a pretty good idea that they're not going to run into you unless they're
actually tailgating. Besides which, if you signal them to pass when it's not
safe, and there's an accident as a result, you can be found at fault (plus,
if they're over the line, and they see someone coming, they're going to shift
right back to the right...possibly right into you).
Sometimes there's a very hesitant driver who has room to pass safely, but
won't (because he can't judge the space). If it's VERY safe, sometimes I'll
slow down and give a gentle signal, but only if it's really safe. A car behind
me who sees me is most unlikely to cause me any trouble unless he passes me
and tries to make a right turn in a hurry. Otherwise, this car can be very
useful to me, since it will discourage someone else from making a left turn
across my path.
