One of the good things about being Asian is that even if the only UV exposure you get is from a monitor, your skin color still doesn't look pasty white. You can be a nerd and have a good skin tone, too. :-) ... And if you've been out in the sun for 4.5 hours, and your shoulders are merely red, you're most definitely not "burning like a white boy". That would be if you were only out in the sun for say, 45 minutes. I had a problem similaar to yours, too, when I started bicycling a lot this summer. My sun tan lotion reflexes were complete shot, because I can be out in the sun for an hour or two, and my skin will just not notice. The problem was, I was being out for a lot longer when I was bicycling. People with really pale skin can need to put lotion on even if they're only out for a relatively short amount of time, so it's just automatic for them.
