is actually not turning out quite as poorly as i'd really expected, but
there are the occasional reminders of why i hate this town:

1) half of the letters to the editor are about why either aids victims,
gays, abortion-rights advocates, etc. are going to go to hell (i have a
particularly juicy one of those that i'll probably ceremonially burn when i
get back to boston, which argues that the only sad part of aids are the
'innocents who didn't get it through sex' and comments that 'this life is
only a test; don't fail it,' etc.).

2) the language just feels stilted and stereotyping than i'm used to; my
dental hygienist (sic?) described bostonians as rude on the basis of one
hotel clerk, my mother's coworkers make openly racist comments, and the
terminology is not inclusive. i know this may sound very 'revisionist' of
me, but i like it when people i know use terms like 'person' instead of
'man,' for example.

and of course, there's very little to do, which is why i'm spewing on this
here forum. see you next year.
