When I was in eighth grade, my English teacher included stuff from
W. B. Key's "Subliminal Seduction" (the classic subliminal-ads-are-
controlling-our-minds rant-book) in the class unit on advertising.
I, of course, believed what he told me, and spent the next few years
noticing "hidden sexual messages" in not only advertisements, but
stucco walls, carpet patterns, the traces of jelly left on the inside
of the jar, and so on and so on. I eventually recovered.
