There are great advantages to using cats instead of traps.  First off,
the cat takes the rap for murder instead of you, and (depending upon its
upbringing) may eat the evidence.  Second, once a cat is ensconced in a
territory, the mice (who are not as stupid as one might think of such
tiny creatures) all leave for safer territory.  Cats will also do a nice
job on roaches and on flies.  You will, however, need to get a flea
collar and be prepared to do some flea-bombing on occasion.

This year is the first time I've lived without cats in 8 years, and also
the first time I've had to deal with household pests (mice and roaches
both.)  I'm convinced that even my NYC apartment would be vermin-free if
my cats were with me ...
