I found that no amount of polite prodding to stop micromanaging my
life seemed to get my parents to stop. So, as soon as I was able to
break my financial ties, I started ignoring them. When the realized I
was serious about having my own life, and realized there was nothing
they could do about it, they began to deal with it. It was painful
for everyone, and I'm still not 100% happy with the way things are
working out (that's a big surprise to some of you, I'm sure ;-), but
I think things are better.

Of course, now I have my mother calling me and telling me how
*wonderful* she would feel if I came home for such-and-such a holiday
or whatever. But at least I don't feel like I'm obligated to come
home every holiday and long weekend. And they always discuss plans
ahead of time with me, now.
