I have found that most people, myself included, tend to know what they
really want in most situations. Such decisions can be difficult
because of other conflicting circumstances---what other people will
think of the decider, irrational or contradictory values/ethics,
information overload, unrelated stress, etc. All these conflicting
issues frequently bury the original desire under mounds of confusion,
because there is no concrete handle with which to hold on to the
opinion. The coin trick is useful because it often pulls the original
desire out from under the confusion. It is either heads or tails, and
nothing in between; the absolute fact is more powerful than inconstant
thoughts.
