This, too, shall pass.

Occasionally, two people meet, and if they are graced by Fortune, they fall
in love. Sometimes the love lasts, and they are married; more often, it
wanes as the two people mature in opposing directions. Should they be
fortunate, they consider their time spent together to have been, on the
whole, better than if they were alone. I have been graced with such
opportunities in the past.

But on rare occasion, when two people of such high character meet, they
find a love so true, that it is infectious; that those around them can see
plainly with their eyes how happy they are, and these same witnesses can
bear testimony to that elusive theory of true love. I have seen such
happiness: it was at their wedding.

Alas that I am not of such caliber, for the saying, "This, too, shall pass"
has caught up with me. Time has decreed that my character is not worthy,
and that now I must walk an old but familiar path.

In my mind's eye, I caught My Depression looking wistfully at the Green
building. Laughing with scorn born not of desperation, but rather,
experience and maturity of years, I seized it by its throat: dragged it up
the stairs until at last I had gained the rooftop. From there, by force of
Will, I cast it over the side and did not bother to watch its descent.
Rather, with my arms, i lofted Hope into the air: this, this I rested my
eyes on, while it looked me square in the eye, wings beating the air, until
at last it turned and sped off into the distance. In time, perhaps it will
return. But of no matter; I turned on my steady feet and returned to my
friends on the ground.

My friends, who most have both feet firmly planted in the ground. I do not
wish the despair my behavior will undoubtedly bring upon them; in the past,
I have been tempted to scold those whose behavior I have found to be
aberrant in a fashion I predict mine will soon emulate. But as one friend
likes to remind me, Pride cometh before the fall. Well. Time to do
better, I suppose. I have seen people of excellent character; now is a
good time to be like them.
