I've decided that my life would be much easier if I was able to
follow two rules:
1. Don't make mistakes.
2. Have a lot of money in case you have to bribe your
way out of violations of rule #1.
People are plenty willing to screw you to the ground as punishment for
any goof at any time in the remote past. (Of course, there is no
shortage of people who are willing to screw you to the ground just for
the fun of it, but that's a different problem altogether.)
