I completely understand not ever answering one's phone. When the call
is very likely to be from someone whose purpose in calling is to make
you miserable and guilt-ridden, you just don't want to deal with them.
Before the invention of the telephone, the concept of being socially
"on call" from anyone at any time of day was considered absurd. Using
an answering machine in this fashion is merely a return to the
previous state of privacy.
