I wasn't sure whether to put this in err or here, but since the
thread started here, i'll put it here.
All the following are from the Letters to the (Sports) Editor page
of the 2/9/92 _Boston Herald_...
They are in answer to the question "Given his reputation, could
you be an impartial juror in the Tyson trial?"
"It would be easy to be a juror at Mike Tyson's trial. Actually, the
case is quite simple. The girl obviously was seeking fame to say she
was with Tyson. She felt humiliated when the whole thing was over and
done, and Tyson most likely forgot to kiss her goodnight before he
threw here out of his room. Maybe she could sue him for a couple of
bucks for a lack of romance?
"After Mike is vindicated of these ridiculous charges, he will be
able to go back to boxing. And the woman from Rhode Island, will be
able to resume selling perfume at Filene's Basement.
"She does not even rank with Jessica Hahn or Gennifer Flowers. They
seemed to be classy gold diggers.
-Lee Brucks
Nashua, NH"
"Despite his odorous reputation, I would be an impartial juror in the
Mike Tyson rape trial because the sins of yesterday are not the crimes
of today.
"As a juror, I would vote Bruiser Mike guilty of aggravated assault.
I am of the (debateable) opinion that this lustful, compulsive act was
inspired by sexual provocation.
-Peter L. Caparell
Roslindale"
"I think it would be difficult for most people to be impartial
jurors considering Mike Tyson's reputation.
"However, I think I could put aside my personal reputation simply
because I don't know how much of Indianapolis the 18-year-old woman
expected to see at 2am. from Mike Tyson's hotel room.
-Steven Boozang
Roslindale"
"Although I could not say I would be an impartial juror, I can say
that Mike Tyson without Cus D'Amato [Tyson's "discoverer" and original
trainer -- rlcarr] is like a vicious wild lion without a trainer. And
nobody can be impartial knowing the nature of a wild lion.
-Marty Foley
Rockland"
"Given Mike Tyson's reputation, no, I couldn't be an impartial
juror. I'd vote for acquittal. His accuser, who has been depicted as
an intelligent college student, went to his hotel room. One judge
called her naive and sophisticated, a paradox if I've ever heard one.
"Mike Tyson was already a rich celebrity. His accuser wants to be.
What price glory?
-Doris McKeon
Lexington"
"No, I have always been a fan of Iron Mike and frankly do not think
that he is guilty of the crime he is on trial for. For whatever
reason (publicity, money, etc.), I believe she consented to having sex
with him.
"What is his reputation supposed to be? I'm sure it's no worse
than Willie K. Smith's!
-Barbara Ward
Boston"
(as for me, I doubt I could be impartial, from what I've heard about
Tyson over the years. However, given what I've heard, I'd probably
vote "not guilty" -- I think he IS guilty, but that the prosecution
hasn't proven that past a reasonable doubt.)
