It was a 4.301 project. Remember the lame Toolpike II from last year? That wa salso a 4.301 project. It isn't that he hacker ethic is crumbling (at least not in these instances), it's that these aren't ``professional'' hackers, and they don't have responsible (read: experienced) mentors from the hacking community.
