I think this is the kind of converation that you're supposed to report
to your manager (or someone even higher up where you work), so that the
company can do some remedial education of the community.
I'd suggest, also, that you follow up your conversation with a letter,
cc'd to yourself, so that if in the future your job itself is affected
by this ignorant prejudice, you can refer to it should you decide to
take any formal action.
