This weekend sucked, as far as the outdoors were concerned. I was in
Connecticut, where it was 102 degrees on Sunday at 1PM, with 60%
humidity and a "Heat Index" of 110 (Heat Index is sort of an inverse
of the Wind Chill Factor - it takes temperature and humidity, and
gives a measure of how abysmal it is.)
That was a general problem. A more specific problem was that
the water main coming into my Mom's house broke (right where it comes
into the house.) It took three men and a backhoe several hours to dig
down to the cutoff valve (the ground had shifted enough to hide that,
and ours was 8 feet below the ground, instead of 5 feet like the
others on the block...) They got it all fixed (on Wednesday) but by
this weekend, there was still wet stuff in the basement... so I
spent the weekend cleaning stuff out (mostly machine tools, random
electronic hardware, and pieces of wood and pipe...) Fortunately not
all that much was actually damaged, but it was a mess.
