WOMAN ABDUCTED FROM HOME; OFFICIALS ISSUE GULF COAST ALERT

Law enforcement official are looking fro an armed man who alledgedly abducted
a 19-year-old woman Friday, the Escambia County Sheriff's Department said.
The woman is still missing.
A warrant has been issued for the arrest of Kevin Wayne Roberts, 24, of the
2700 block of Cycle Drive. He is wanted on three counts of aggravated assault
with a firearm, kidnapping and use of a firearm while committing a criminal
offence.

Roberts talked to the victim, an ex-girlfriend, about 11:30am in the front
yard of her house [address omitted].
A friend of the victim tried to help her when Roberts began to force her into
his truck, Officer Mark Weiss said.
Roberts pulled handgun from underneath his shirt and threatened to kill the
friend and her child if the woman did not get into the vehicle, Wass said.
The victim's friend ran into the house and called the Sheriff's Department
when a neighbor told Roberts to put down the gun, Wass said.
Roberts pointed the gun and yelled at the neighbor, Wass said. The suspect
fired one shot into the air, Wass said.
Roberts then fled with the victim.

Now this may not really be depressing to you, but Kevin Roberts was a
childhood friend of mine. I spent many hours running around the back woods of
the Scottish highlands with this guy. We built forts, played Cops and Robbers
(he _was_ always a robber, they had more fun, he said.), stole sand from the
golf course to build castles, and tormented the neighborhood stray dog along
with the other neighborhood kids. (Actually, everyone loved Chico. We never
tormented him, just teased him when he would try to bite our shoelaces.)
Kevin has been apprehended and is now sitting in jail awaiting trial on
charges of armed assault and use of a firearm (fortunately the kidnapping
charge was dropped).
Kevin has had a rocky live, getting kicked out of the Army and losing job
after job afterwords due to his constant fighting.
It really saddens me that a friend, someone I knew so well as a child, could
screw up so badly in life.
sigh.
