specifically, Kaposi's Sarcoma is a skin cancer ... one of the most 
visible signs of HIV infection (it occurs outside HIV-infected 
populations, but that is fairly unusual).

imagine a small blotch about twice the size of a conventional 
zit ... only it's irregularly-shaped and a *dark* deep purple,
almost like a micro-bruise.  now imagine more than one of these,
usually on the face, hands, and forearms (again, KS does occur 
elsewhere on the body, but HIV-infected people often see it first
on hands and/or face).

before HIV testing, this was the way that many people found out
they were HIV-infected.
