You'd be surprised at how reasonable parents can be. My mother was,
at first, quite upset when I told her I wanted to take a term off, but
it helped when I told her that the idea had been suggested by my
adviser (not by me originally), and that he wanted to talk to her
about it. It also helped when my older sister supported me.

If you find a good enough job, you'll be able to afford a place to
live; I was lucky enough to be able to continue working for Project
Athena full-time; I don't know if you will be able to find anything
like that.

In any case, my year off was for different reasons, but I still think
it's a good idea if you're really feeling down on life -- if it's
going to affect your school work, then you're going to dig yourself in
deeper and deeper, and get more and more depressed -- a vicious circle
that can quite possibly end up with you getting kicked out of school.
Not a good scene.
