pyramids and "wavelets"

Sigh. The lead article in the Health & Science section of today's
Boston Glob talked about signal compression with what someone calls
"wavelets." So I read it. Sure enough, they're talking about the
same technique that the Media Lab has been developing for years, under the
name "pyramids"! In fact, Ted Adelson - my UROP advisor last year -
invented the damn things! But nowhere was the Media Lab or Ted mentioned,
anywhere in the article. Someone else got all the credit for it.

I know, I know, they were probably parallel developments, each group
unaware of the other's progress. But maybe not. I'm just getting tired of
seeing stuff in the news all the time about things that the Lab has been
instrumental in putting together, and never seeing the Lab get credit
for it. Blahhhhh.

Ah, but we get in the news when Nintendo gives us a grant. We should
be grateful. :-|
