Well, the Smiths can be cynical
(their debut album, featuring such tracks as "Pretty Girls Make Graves"),
but some of their lyrics are so out-of-control, they just make you laugh:

"I was only joking when I said I'd like to smash every tooth in your head."

"Girlfriend in a coma...there were times when I could have murdered her."
(to a light, bouncing melody)

"And if a ten ton truck killed the both of us,
To die by your side, oh the pleasure, the privilege is mine."

"I know I'm unloveable; you don't have to tell me.
 Message received, loud and clear."

"I wear black on the outside 'cause
black is how I feel on the inside."

"I don't mind if you forget me.
I've learned my lesson--I never left
 An impression on anyone."

"There's a club if you'd like to go--
you might meet somebody who really loves you.
So you go and you stand on your own, and you leave on your own,
And you go home and you cry and you want to die."
