alt.sources #1777 on beacon has some patches to sc which we might
consider.

I'm going to wait on these until they get released as an official
patch. They don't look so impressive that we need to snarf them right
away, and I trust the author of sc to be able to "audit" their
effectiveness and robustness in his program more than we can.
