Sometimes, when I run rrn by typing /mit/sipb/vaxbin/rrn, it asks
me if I want to join all the newgroups. Sometimes it doesn't, and
correctly just asks me if I want to join new newsgroups, but it's
very annoying to have to go thru the entire list. Is there
something I'm doing wrong? Or is there any way to skip all of it?

This is a known bug in rrn; whenever a newsgroup is deleted, or the
list of active newsgroups (the "active file") is rearranged, rrn loses
track of whether it asked you about a newsgroup before, and asks you
about all the groups not listed in your .newsrc file.

The workaround is to make sure that all newsgroups are listed in your
.newsrc by answering "yes" to the question, and then "u"nsubscribing
from the newsgroup later on.

Other newsreaders (including gnus, and, I believe, xrn) don't have
this problem; they automatically subscribe you to all new groups and
let you unsubscribe when you see a group you have no interest in
reading.
