xrn defaults (or the program itself?)

What's going on with these? In the oh, 6 to 10 times I have run xrn,
I have gotten probably 3 different screen configurations or more. I
never know what I'm going to get next.

This time, the button box with "next unread" &c in it came up one
button high, with no grip for resizing, and the commands that I wanted
to use weren't visible.

Two minutes later (while sending this message), I tried starting it
again, and got the window 3 buttons high -- large enough for newsgroup
mode, but not for article mode -- and again no grip.

The first of these two times there was a new newsgroup it prompted me
about; I don't know if that makes a difference.

This would be a useful program, if only it could have ONE CONSISTENT
and REASONABLE starting configuration, with grips for tuning it. For
now, I'm going back to "xterm -e rrn"...
