...your interpretation is correct:
it failed on the dell (student center,
closest to entrance door to the right),
but worked on an ibm.
i followed the /mit/cdrom/README
instructions exactly the same
in both cases.
my guess right now is that
maybe the fact that i was using
a cdrw rather than a cdr
made the difference...
