To the best of my knowledge, it's caused by having a folder with too many messages in it. If Netscape ever has to rebuild its cache of the large folder, Netscape sends a very long line to the server, longer than the server can handle. The server doesn't send a reply that Netscape can use, and suddenly the folder becomes unreadable (in Netscape). (Technically, it's caused by having too many URI gaps, and not by too many messages.) You can avoid the "ack! it inc'd when I accidentally ran 'pine'" situation of step #6 by: 1 Go to pine's [M]ain Menu, choose [S]etup and then [C]onfig. 2 Move down a few lines to the option named "incoming-source-folders" 3 It should have a value similar to "<No Value Set: using ..." 4 [D]elete its value. The value should change to "<Empty Value>" 5 [E]xit the configuration screen. Pointing fingers at this point doesn't help you, but I'm very concerned about step #7 below. A mistake in putting your mail back onto the server could equally well be responsible for causing data loss. (Nothing you've said suggests that a mistake happened in step 7, but nothing you've said rules out a mistake in step 7.) I've tried going below quota and using "pine" to auto-inc myself above quota. It didn't lose my mail, at least not the way I did it. If you were able to find a way to repeat what you did I'd be interested in having you show it to me, since the things I tried myself didn't cause it.
