I'll take a guess at what may be going on:
The standard Athena configuration files usually set up your login shell
so that the "add" command works properly. (It is a shell alias.) If
you're seeing that error message, it suggests that your account isn't
setting itself up correctly when you log in.
If the problem only happened once, and doesn't happen when you log in
later, it's probably some temporary problem. If it happens each time you
log in, it suggests that your account has been misconfigured (either by
you, or maybe you let a friend do it for you).
The "add" alias is defined in /usr/athena/lib/init/cshrc; a default athena
account will have a .cshrc file that sources this system cshrc. Users are
encouraged to put their own customizations into the .cshrc.mine file,
instead of into the .cshrc file.
I hope this helps,
