Been there, done that.

Does anyone on either bug-sipb or linux-dev think that this is a bad
	idea?

It was a good idea when it was done in Feb 1999.

Let me explain:

/mit/sipb/machtype contains a directory called "linux", which contains
libc5 executables. /mit/sipb/arch/i386_linux2 points to this
directory, because i386_linux2 was the sysname used on RedHat-Athena 4.2.

Over the past year or so, we have not been supporting (installing new
software for) the linux-libc5 machtype. machtype/linux, like
machtype/vax, exists primarily for historical purposes.

/mit/sipb/machtype contains a directory called "linux3", which
contains libc6 executables. /mit/sipb/arch/i386_linux22 and i386_linux3
point to this directory. This machtype is supported.

All is well.

This thread started when dmaze reported a bug in
machtype/linux/bin/latex2e. His bug report is correct: That script
does not work on RedHat-Athena 4.2 systems. I may try to fix the bug
after I finish writing this email, or I may just ignore it, since
RH-A 4.2 is not a supported platform anymore.

Sal.

P.S. /mit/sipb/machtype/linux3/bin contains 76 symlinks to
../../linux/bin. Of course, these symlinks should be erased and those
programs should be rebuilt. Maybe I'll deal with some of them in the
near future.
