   xdvi (both X10 and X11) seems to omit horizontal lines from the display
   under certain circumstances....

   The '-' gets displayed but the fraction bars and the top of the radical
   do not.  Is this a bug with xdvi or does it have something to do with
   X?

The problem is that the lines, scaled down to fit on the screen, get
rounded down to zero width.  If you expand the magnification, say by
typing "2s", you can see the lines.  If xdvi were to make the lines
visible, they would be too thick.
