Hi. Pursuant to a decision from fuzzballs, the Athena release team
has decided to start xss in the default dotfiles in 8.4, unless users
set skip_x_startup or skip_xss in .environment. (We've arranged it so
that xss-button will work with an existing screensaver; we realize
that users who run xss in their own dotfiles will get an error.)
We are concerned that users who run the SIPB xscreensaver will wind up
with dueling screensavers, which is probably not good for the
monitors. As a separate matter, we're finding that having renamed
xscreensaver to xss makes gnome kind of unhappy, and we'd like to take
the xscreensaver name in 8.5 or so.
So, we'd like the SIPB locker to rename xscreensaver to something else
(xscreensaver.real, sipb-xscreensaver, I don't particularly care) in
at least the sun4x_57 and i386_linux22 arch directories, and to
install a script much like the sgi_65 script. Here's some candidate
script text:
The SIPB xscreensaver has changed its name to <whatever>.
Starting with Athena release 8.4, the default dotfiles run a
screensaver which will automatically activate after ten
minutes of idle time and lock the screen after eleven minutes.
You can run:
xss-button &
to create a button to control this screen saver.
If you elect to continue using the SIPB xscreensaver, you
should put the command
set skip_xss
in your .environment file to avoid dueling screensavers.
I can make this change myself if no one objects. It should probably
happen around the 26th, when we plan to go to early. (The Linux
cluster machines will be running the early release.) For Solaris, I
figured I will make a separate machype directory (machtype/sun4x_57,
perhaps, since the analog to "sgi6" would be the confusing "sun47") so
that we can make the change only for sun4x_57.
