I have also observed this behaviour. I think it happens when xdvi thinks
a font is already loaded but it isn't --- if you start up xdvi again, it
should be fine.
Since the cure for the symptom is so easy, and the disease flares up so
rarely, finding a real cure has been pretty low on my priority list. If
it's becoming a real nuisance, I'll look into the problem in more detail.
