Thinking about the error message, I can think of two factors
which might be relevant. One: there are some situations where
exmh tries to launch a child process of itself, and have that
child process do some of its work. Two: background processing
doesn't work if xhost has been used to give other machines
permission to access your X display.
I'm pretty sure that I had set exmh's default customization to
disable background processing, but it is possible for user's
personal preferences to override the default settings. To turn
it off, click on the "Preferences" button to bring up the
preferences box, then on "Background Processing". If the entry
"Separate background process" is On, you'll see those BgRegister
insecure errors. Turn the setting Off.

This can easily happen if you've been using mh commands (such as
"pack" or "refile") from the command line. Exmh tries to speed
things up for you by maintaing a cache of what your scanned
folder looked like. It does a reasonable job of keeping
accurate, but on the times when it drifts, use "Rescan" from the
"More..." folder menu, as Kev suggested.
