It's probably confused by the presence of the (unsubscribed) group

alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt.alt

in your .newsrc. If you remove the line mentioning it and either
always start xrn with the option "+fullNewsrc" or add the line

	XRn*fullNewsrc: false

to your .Xresources, that problem should probably go away.

According to xrn's manpage (man xrn), that's the default behavior if
there are no new groups.
