vim / terminal types?

Very odd.
I was helping a user tonight, and bumped into the odd problem
with vim. Using the user's account, logged into bobbi-harlow,
I opened a new xterm, and tried to edit a Makefile using vim.
Got the same error message that others had seen, about slashes
in terminal names. So I ran vi instead.
An hour or so later, I again wanted to edit the file, and typed
vim out of habit. This time, it worked (no error about line 323,
and terminal 'M1'). I quit and re-started a few times, and it
kept on working.
I'm not sure what the error is, but it seems to be sporadic.
