That sounds like a problem with the network connection between the
machine you were sitting at at the time and your AFS file server.
Your mail was temporarily inaccessible but not lost. Such network
problems usually don't last long; in all likelyhood the network
problem has ceased to exist by now, so you should be able to read
your mail again.
