Way back when the new sipb locker went public, you wrote:

I've been considering proposing a change to the locker model to
introduce platform/${HOSTTYPE}/bin as a valid binary directory ("add"
and "athdir" would look for it...)

I've been using the name "platform" in the 8.1 Athena sources...
if there's an actual argument for "machtype" being a better name than
"platform," I'm willing to listen to it.)

The reason I chose "machtype" was that "arch" and "platform" are
basically synonyms. There's no good way to figure out or remember
that an "arch" directory is supposed to contain AFS sysnames and
"platform" is supposed to contain machtype system names. A directory
called "machtype" may suggest "related to /bin/athena/machtype."

(On the other hand, the name "machtype" often annoys me because it
makes me have to type more than two letters before hitting tab.)

I don't particularly care which name is used, but I think the concept
is a good idea and I'd like to see it used by add/athdir.

Have a nice day,
Sal.
