Well, the error message that you saw includes a description of the
problem (in addition to a lot of mostly useless verbiage):

This indicates that you ran out of space when exmh tried writing some
data to disk (presumably data you received in a mail message). One
possible reason is that you have some files which have been marked for
deletion, but haven't actually gotten removed yet so you'd have the
option of undeleting them. To remove any such files, type
purge
at the athena% prompt.
