You just helped me figure out what was wrong. When I added the lines
for using VM to my .emacs file last year (when VM 5.95 was installed),
I was using the vm.elc file from /mit/sipbsrc/src/lib/elisp/vm-5.95beta.
I've just changed all those lines to use vm-beta.elc in
/mit/sipb/lib/elisp & everything's working fine now. Thanks! :^)
