One possibility is that the newsgroups actually no longer exist.
Another possibility is that a bug in xrn had made it unable to parse
your .newsrc file. I think this may occur if your .newsrc file has
very long lines, which can happen if there are many separate article
ranges that you have read, e.g.,
alt.a.news.group: 1-2,4-7,10-22, (etc. for thousands of characters)
If you think this may be occurring, you may want to regenerate your
.newsrc file, perhaps by just listing the 5 newsgroup names
followed by colons, each on a line by itself, e.g.,
alt.group.one:
alt.group.two:
and so on. You would need to do this while xrn was not running.
