Actually, this is an installation problem and has nothing to do with
the linux1 vs. linux2 problem:

(bart-savagewood-warlord) in /mit/sipb
Ready> ls -l linuxetc
lrwxr-xr-x   1 svalente root          20 Jan 21  1996 linuxetc -> arch/i386_linux1/etc
(bart-savagewood-warlord) in /mit/sipb/linuxetc
Ready> ls
total 3040
drwxr-xr-x   2 svalente root        2048 May  8  1994 .
drwxrwxr-x   5 root     root        2048 Aug  9 12:16 ..
-rwxr-xr-x   1 svalente root     1552384 Feb  9  1996 Mosaic

So, whomever installed xftp didn't install it properly for linux.
