I sent this message yesterday, but I was trying to use aliases and I
got 7 or 8 "User unknown" and "Unable to deliver" messages back from
the one copy I tried to send. Apologies if you actually did receive
a copy of this yesterday.

Subject: VM 5.x

I recently found that SIPB has a couple versions of VM available (in
/mit/sipbsrc/src/lib/elisp; 5.33 beta, 5.59 beta). I'm very used to
ELM and don't like MH very much, so I fiddled with my .elisp file
trying to get one of the VM versions working for me. I've been able
to get 5.33 running, and it works okay. I haven't been able to get
5.59 to deal with the POP server, though. The README.athena file in
the 5.33 directory says that the source code for vm-5.33 was changed
to make it work with POP, but there's no equivalent README file for
the 5.59 directory. There's also a file called vm-athena-patch in the
5.59 directory which isn't in the 5.33 directory. I'd like to be able
to use VM 5.59, but I don't know what that patch does, and how to get
it to work with vm to be able to get my mail from the POP server (if
that's indeed what it does). Anyone have any hints for me here?

What I'd really like (wish list, now) is VM 5.72 beta (or a newer
version, if there is one). 5.72 deals with aliases correctly, has a
better interface than does 5.33, and is overall more pleasant to work
with. Is this the kind of project that new members/prospectives get
to work on? And since I'm one of probably a very few people who wants
to use VM, would the chances of seeing VM 5.72 in the SIPB locker
improve greatly if I became a prospective and worked on this myself?

Thanks for your time, help, and advice!
