Hi there.
I'm confused about your report on a number of points.
I cannot reproduce this bug, nor can I think of any way that having
done `add sipb' could possibly affect emacs that way.
The commands `C-h C-f' (describe function) and `C-h C-k'
(describe-key) are inrelated to the emacs `info' tree, that may just
be terminology. Do you actually have problems with the emacs info
tree (C-h i)? Do any of the other C-h commands work?
The only way that I can think of that this might happen is if you had
emacs configured to use SIPB's info dir file, which doesn't seem to be
the case for you.

Both me and a friend of mine have discovered this painful bug. It applies to
both SUN and DEC and ???
Quite simply, the emacs19 commands "C-h C-f" and "C-h C-k" break as soon as
you "add sipb" to your machine. We are able to temporarily restore these
important commands (searching the emacs 'info' tree) by doing "detach sipb".
Please Help!

NOTE we turned ALL our customizations off (even removing .emacs) yet the bug
persists as described above. Another "antidote" we discovered is to launch
emacs with "emacs19 -q -l ~/.emacs &". We haven't the darndest idea why
that works and the (supposedly) equivalent "emacs19 &" is buggy.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------
The bug manifests itself as follows:
Emacs does not complete the search, failing with one of 2 error msg's
that it displays in the minibuffer. Usually it's the following:
Can't find emacs-18 or any compressed version of it!
Apparently, something bad bad bad appears in the path as soon as you "add sipb"
