Nevermind my earlier bug report. I don't quite understand why, but I had
managed to hit some key that sort of thinks it's caps lock (in fact, it's
labeled "Caps Lock") which I had xmodmapped to be something else. This
didn't affect anything obvious about my typing (things were still
normal-cased), but it caused several things to break, including using alt
and meta, and using the xscreensaver menu. Repeatedly pressing the key
toggles the effect. :-)
